Artists’ initiative: The Hex

(London / GB) www.hexprojects.org

“We began The Hex in 2006, when we arrived in a flat that was larger than the one we had previously lived in. Our immediate thought was to start doing shows. They would be solo shows, usually with people that we knew already. These artists were doing interesting work, but most hadn’t had solo shows yet.

By staging exhibitions in the flat, we created a unique relationship between ourselves, the artists, and the space. We were clear that it was not to be a gallery. What was most interesting was the development of the work in relation to the flat, and the way that the history of previous shows influenced the later artists.

We intentionally blurred the lines between artist/gallery-operator/curator. Jason Dungan and Maria Zahle have shown work as part of the project, and The Hex has made sculptures. We’ve never labeled ourselves in relation to the project, we’re just The Hex, and The Hex can be anything.” (Jason Dungan and Maria Zahle)
