Artists’ initiative: Chto delat / What is to be done?

(St. Petersburg / RU) www.chtodelat.org / Members: core members around 10 / Contact: Dmitry Vilensky / Founding year 2003

The platform Chto delat / What is to be done? was founded in early 2003 in St. Petersburg by a group of artists, critics, philosophers and writers from Petersburg, Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod with the goal of merging political theory, art and activism. It is a project that is aimed at creating and developing a dialogue of different positions on the politicization of knowledge production and the place of art and poetics in this process. The platform’s activity aims at triggering a collective initiative in a form of “Temporary Artistic Soviets”. It is the “Temporary Artistic Soviets” that could serve as a prototypical social model, capable of formulating and realizing its goals independently and taking on the function of an alternative power, an open system for interaction with society at large.

The participants of Chto delat engage in a variety of art projects, including video works, installations, public actions, radio programs and artistic examinations of social and political space.

The workgroup as an editorial committee publishes an international English-Russian newspaper, with a special focus on the Russian artistic-intellectual situation. In its editorial approach, the committee not only wants to engage in a confrontational re-reading of various theoretical and practical approaches of the Left, but also to focus on updating the potential of a Soviet past repressed in the course of Soviet history and on how it develops in the current situation of neo-capitalism. This free publication is based on artistic experimentations with different research methods and is usually made in connection with specific art events, distributed at congresses or exhibitions, social forums and rallies, where it reaches a broader cultural public.
